The Painted Hall, Greenwich
Candid reflections in mirror
The magnificent Painted Hall is recognised as the greatest piece of decorative painting in England and has been described as ‘the Sistine Chapel of the UK’. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor.
At a staggering 5,683 square feet the Painted Hall ceiling is the largest figurative painting in the country. The theme of Sir James Thornhill’s exuberant lower hall ceiling (between 1708 and 1727) is the triumph of Peace and Liberty over Tyranny. It pays tribute to King William and Queen Mary, seated in glory in the middle of the central oval, and the importance of naval power to the fortunes of the nation.
