Mulbekh Panorama

Mulbekh (3304 m; 10,839 ft), a small scenic village with a population of only 5,730 people, in the Zanskar-Ladakh region of the state of Jammu and Kashmir in northern India. It is located on Srinagar – Leh National Highway (NH 1D); 45 km from Kargil and Leh is further 197 km. Mulbekh derived its name from a small watercourse, which originates from the Zanskar Range and meets the Suru River at Kargil.

Mulbekh is renowned for its people who are secular in character and devout preacher of Buddhism. Just a kilometre beyond Mulbekh town (heading toward Leh), is the famous Chamba Statue, a striking enormous figure of Maitreya Buddha carved into the rock face on the right hand side of the road, overlooking the old trade route and the present-day modern highway.
