Candid Street Shots...... Notting Hill Carnival

Aspects of Carnival - by Fiona Hawthorne

A new thirteen panels installation created by local artist Fiona Hawthorne is the latest to transform a 100-metre stretch along Portobello Road's North Wall. `Aspects of Carnival' celebrates what is undoubtedly the area's most significant contribution to contemporary culture: the Notting Hill Carnival. It tells the full story of Carnival - from early preparations, through the procession itself, to the big clean-up in the early hours.

This installation is part of `the Portobello Road North Wall Project', a public art programme from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea which enables contemporary artists to showcase their talent in one of London's most vibrant creative hubs and popular tourist destinations. The Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s biggest street festival is an annual grand event that has been held every year since 1965 on the streets of Notting Hill, London, UK in the month of August. It is led by members of the West Indian community, particularly the Trinidadian and Tobagonian British population or Trinis;, many of whom have lived in the area since the 1950s.

The carnival attracted around one million people last year, making it one of the largest street festivals in the world. More: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notting_Hill_Carnival
