Othello Tunnels near Hope, BC, Canada

The beautiful Othello Tunnels near Hope, British Columbia, Canada.

About this photoWe recently bought a small used camper van as we want to enjoy some road trips in the future within Canada and the USA (shorter and longer).

We (daughter of 15, husband, myself and 2 dogs) took our camper van for a test run and went camping for one night in Hope, BC, Canada. We stayed at The Coquihalla Campground which was great and our test night was a success. We hope to be on the road again for a longer trip soon.

During our stay we visited the recently reopened Othello Tunnels which were about 15 minutes driving from our campground. These tunnels and the area is so beautiful and impressive.

I took this photo with my cell phone.

Some information about the Othello Tunnels in Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park:

The Othello Tunnels were originally built in the early 1900's and are a straight line of tunnels that pass over the Coquihalla River and through granite. They were originally a series of five tunnels consiting of train tunnels and bridges that connected the Kootenay Region with the British Columbian coast through the Coquihalla Gorge.

The Othello Tunnels became part of Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park in May 1986. The former Kettle Valley Railway line, including the tunnels, was abandoned in 1961 after a major washout. The tunnels were then incorporated into the park's trail system where visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature as well as it's rich history. Much of this park was washed out and damaged by a severe rainstorm in November 2021 and has been closed for visitors ever since. Recently 3 of the 5 tunnels have been restored along with other parts of the park and it has been partially reopened for visitors.
