Bleached and Buried

Union Cemetery on Hilton Head Island - In place of flowers, many old tombstones like this are adorned with conch shells. The shells are bleached white from the sun. This man died in 1898 - I wonder how many years these shells have been lying here, and who lovingly placed them . . .
