Château de Queribus
The Château de Queribus has been standing at the top of a mountain, defending the countryside below for almost 1000 years.
Usually occupied by a garrison of less than 20 knights, the castle was successfully defended against a number of invasion attempts, and it's understandable why - it sits just below the peak of the highest mountain in the area, and the ascent is a grueling ordeal. First fighting with bows, swords and crossbows, then later with firearms and cannon, this wonderful castle has stood the test of time.
Just be careful of the wind if you go - when I was there the wind especially at the main gate was so strong it almost ripped the glasses off my face. It's a heck of a hike, but well worth it.
