(065/365) Tuesday March 6th
Having cycled past this numerous times I decided it was time to have a go. I was the only passenger on this occasion.
The bus is 18 months into an extended trial. It runs on public roads over a 3km round trip along the South Perth foreshore, making it the furthest for any such trial in the world. The bus runs at level 4 High Automation, meaning that drivers are not needed but can intervene if necessary.
The maximum speed reached was a majestic 11km/h. It is capable of faster speeds but is restricted due to current regulations and agreements. Being a bit of a control freak I am not a very good car passenger normally but didn't have any problems riding in this, probably partly due to the slow speed. Apparently there are plans for a trial of driverless taxis in the cpd later this year, which should be very interesting.
