Kenning Motor Group & John Willment (Kingston) Ltd - enamelled key fobs (1960’s)
KENNING MOTOR GROUP
The Kenning Motor Group was founded by George Kenning (later Sir George Kenning) initially as a paraffin oil and soap merchant, whose business became more devoted to the newly emerging motor car. By 1916 his car business had sufficiently developed to win the Ford Motor franchise and over the years gained further franchises for Morris, Austin, MG, Triumph, Standard, Rover and Daimler. The company developed rapidly and by the 1960’s had over 8,000 employees, some 300 depots and 100 petrol forecourts. The company diversified into car tyres, petrol retail, car hire & rentals but their core business remained car dealership. In 1986 the Kenning Motor Group were bought by TKM (Tozer, Kemsley & Millbourn) who broke up the Kenning group of companies and franchises, selling them separately. The Kenning name was revived in 1987 when Sir George’s grandsons George, David and Richard Kenning formed their own new company called GK Group Ltd. having franchises for Ford, Mazda and KIA motors.
