Church Army Gazette (Deus Vult) - lapel badge (c.1920)

The Church Army Gazette was a weekly newspaper first published in 1886 and was the official mouthpiece of the Church Army (CA). It was described as “a Gospel paper for the working man” and was mainly sold in pubs to reach out to those very people the CA would preach amongst informing them of the Gospel and the work of the CA. The Gazette sold for a half-penny (1/2d) each and around the turn of the century had a weekly circulation of over 70,000 copies. Profits arising from the sales of the Gazette amounted to over £1,000 per year which contributed to their overheads such as rent, equipment, clerk salaries, etc.

The CA was founded in 1882 as an evangelist organisation within the Anglican Church of England by the Rev. Wilson Carlile (1847-1942). The CA was a spiritual ‘Army’ to train and send missionaries out into the community to reach out to the most marginalised in society and to engage people more with the Church. The CA also organised social events to bring communities closer together and voluntary youth work for which they are a member of the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services. The CA motto is “Sharing faith through Words and Action” and are active across the United Kingdom and Ireland.

This badge features the publication title and a motto DEUS VULT (God wills it).
