Eastern District Licensed Trade Association Ladies Auxiliary - Secretary badge (1950’s / 1960’s)
The Eastern District Licensed Trade Association Ladies Auxiliary was a sub-group of the National Trade Defence Association(NTDA) for licensed trade victuallers. The Eastern District covered the counties of Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.
The NDTA was formed in 1888 as the National Trade Defence Fund to campaign on behalf of the breweries and licensed trade against the temperance movement, Parliamentary opposition, Sunday closing of pubs and the confiscation of trade licenses without compensation. They also advocated for the improved working conditions and labour rights of those in the licensed trade, as well fund raising for retirement homes and licensed victualler’s benevolent funds. In 1890 they changed their name to the NDTA and in 1958 to the National Trade Development Association. The organisation was dissolved in 1975 and all their assets transferred to The Brewer’s Society.
