Carolina Moon - song badge (c.1931)
This promotional badge was one of many different types issued to promote and advertise popular songs of the day. They were all made during the later 1920’s and well into the 1930’s. There are at least eighty known song badges and probably more to be discovered. Many of the badges like this one, carries the song’s title but others can only be confirmed by inference and comparison with the published music sheet. The song series began around 1925 when Laurence Wright, a music publisher commissioned a series of attractively designed enamel badges to promote their sheet music. Many of the songs are still known today and others long forgotten. Carolina Moon is still available and many of the artistes who recorded it over the years are featured on YouTube.
Most of the song badges were made by Miller’s of Birmingham but also a few by other well known badge manufacturers at the time such as Strattons of Birmingham and J R Gaunt of London. The Carolina Moon badge illustrated above comes in another variety having blue enamel instead of green.
