STAR RIDER SILVER AWARD (RAC/AUC motorcycle training scheme) - Silver Award qualification badge (1980's)

This qualification badge would originally have been awarded for successfully completing the STAR RIDER Silver Award training module. The badge would have accompanied the trainee's certificate.

The Star Rider motorcycle training scheme was launched about 1978 and run by the RAC/AUC (Royal Automobile Club/Auto Cycle Union). It provided motorcycle novices a three module training course (Bronze, Silver and Gold awards) to novice motorcyclists. The Bronze Award taught new motorcycle owners the basics on how to ride their motorbike and the Silver Award was more advanced, with emphasis on the safety aspects of riding a motorbike. The Gold Award module provided more advanced driving skills as well as theory and a driving test. Around 1991, the Star Rider training programme was sold to the CSM (Chelmsford School of Motoring) who continued training under the CSM name.
