Cistercian stained glass windows - Mount St. Joseph Abbey, Roscrea.
An interesting and recently made pair of stained glass windows located in the north side of Mount St. Joseph Cistercian church, Roscrea.
The left panel shows a figure of the Blessed Maria Gabriella of (Christian) Unity. Gabriella was born 1914 into a Sardinian shepherd family and at the age of 21 and became a Trappist Sister of the Cistercian Order. She died at the early age of 25 from TB.
She is reviered for her devotion to unity among Christian peoples and strove for an end to sectarianism. She was especially devoted to the gospel of Saint John and took from that her motto ‘that they may be one’ (John 17.11). She was beatified by Pope John-Paul II on the 25th January 1983.
The background contains images of different churches representing varying religions. The sheep and Good Shepherd are symbolic of her upbringing. The image of buildings behind the sheep represents a panoramic view of Mount St. Joseph, Roscrea. The lowest panel depicts her motto ‘that they may be one’, translated into Irish as ‘go mba aon iad’.
The right panel shows the Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi (1903-1964) who was ordained as a catholic priest in the Onitsha diocese of Nigeria 1937. After 1950, he joined the Cistercian Order at Mount St. Bernard Monastery in England where he adopted the name of Father Cyprian. In March 22nd 1998, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II in recognition of his devotion to the church and missionary work in Nigeria.
The top section shows an image of the Madonna. Behind the main image of father Cyprian is a traditional Nigerian village. The panel below shows a mix of Christianity and Nigerian symbols. A benefactor’s name ‘Bridget M. Kelly’ appears in the lowest panel.
The abbey is located about 2 ½ miles outside Roscrea town and was founded in 1878 by the Trappist Cistercian monks.
Thank you for reading.
