British Horological Institute - member's badge (1950’s)
The British Horological Institute (BHI) was established in 1858 and is the representative body for horologists (makers, repairers & restorers of clocks) throughout Britain. The BHI also oversees the training of horologists, awards diplomas and set professional standards for the industry. There are three levels of membership of the BHI.
The BHI defines horology and horologists as; “Horology is the art, craft and science of making timepieces and of measuring time. Horologists are the people that make, repair, service, conserve and restore instruments that measure time. You will probably know them better as clock and watchmakers.”
This badge depicts the BHI's armillary sphere sundial that is on display outside their headquarters at Upton Hall, Nottinghamshire. This badge may have been issued for sale c.1954 to raise funds for the BHI. A badge of similar design but oval in shape was also issued as a badge of office and for awards.
