The Home Depot Inc. - promotional badges (1990’s / 2000’s)
“The Home Depot Inc” is a chain of DIY and building products/service stores across the United States. Home Depot was founded in 1978 when their first two stored opened in Atlanta, Georgia and over the years, the retail chain has expanded into Canada (1994) and Mexico (2001). Home depot also set up in China (2006) but greatly overestimated the Chinese enthusiasm and demand for DIY home improvements and so withdrew. Expansion into Britain and Ireland with the take-over of the B&Q stores was also considered but this venture did not materialise.

DIY and home improvements do not have the same significance within Chinese society as it does in the US and Europe, Chinese prefer to buy it complete and installed, to pay others for the work to be done for them. It was estimated that the closure of Home Depot’s twelve stores in China cost them about $160 million in 2012. The Home Depot business model did not fit well in China in contrast to DIY store-chain B&Q, despite the growth in home ownership and of the middle-classes there, within the past 20 years or so.)
