The Mayoress War Hospital Supply Depot, Ipswich - volunteer’s badge (1914-1919)

During the First World War, there were over 2,700 War Hospital Supply Depots throughout Britain and Ireland. These depots were staffed by female volunteers whose output consisted mainly of sphagnum moss dressings and bandages, for use in hospitals and at the front. Not long after war had broken out in 1914, cotton wool had become almost unobtainable and so volunteer teams would collect sphagnum moss from wherever it could be found in sufficient quantities, this moss was then sterilised and dried before being used to make the wound dressings. Sphagnum moss was used for its excellent absorbent properties.

The Mayoress War Hospital Supply Depot at Orwell Park in Ipswich was set up by Lady Beatrice Adine Pretyman (née Bridgeman) 1870-1952, Wife of the Hon. Ernest George Pretyman; daughter of 4th Earl of Bradford.
