‘Taj mosque’ Islamic temple token (2nd half of 19th century)

The Mosque series of Indian Islamic temple tokens were struck in and around Bombay (Mumbai) from the mid 19th century until the 1940’s. As with the general trend for temple tokens, these were initially struck in high grade silver that became progressively debased until the coins were being struck on silver-wash brass flans. Despite being of silver and similar weight to contemporary rupees, temple tokens did not circulate as currency.

The reverse side design shows a walled mosque with minarets in a finely engraved image in an unusual style. The obverse refers to the Kalima (Islamic statement of Faith) and the names of the four Holy Caliphs.
