Nei primi anni '60 ho lasciato Londra per L'Italia; avevo un biglietto ferroviario per Trieste, la città di Joyce, l'autore di Ulysses, uno dei libri che amo di più.

Ho insegnato per molti anni lingua inglese; a Treviso sono arrivato per caso, avrei dovuto insegnare ad Udine, ma ci fu il terremoto del '76.

Ho sposato una mia allieva, i miei due figli sono entrambi musicisti. Talvolta, rileggendo Ulysses penso che la mia vita un pò assomigli a quella di James Joyce, l'autore del libro che il fotografo che mi ha ritratto, mi ha pregato di tenere sulle ginocchia in questa foto.

I left London for Italy in the early ‘60s with a train ticket to Trieste, a city associated with Joyce, the author of “Ulysses”, one of my favourite books.

 

I taught English for many years but I came to Treviso by chance. I was going to teach in Udine but it was 1976, the year of the earthquake in Friuli.

 

I married one of my students. Both our children are musicians. Sometimes, when I am reading “Ulysses”, I can see certain similarities between Joyce’s life and mine, which is why the photographer asked me to have “Ulysses” on my knees for this portrait study.
