Fitting the bellset

A GPO 150 candlestick is not a complete telephone by itself. In order for it to function correctly it needs to have a bellset containing not only a bell ringer, but also an induction coil and capacitor.

The standard bellset for the 150 was the No. 1: a chunky, wooden, wall-mounting box containing the necessary components. Later on the bakelite bellset No. 25 could also be used.

I had neither available to use for this telephone but I did have a Siemens Brothers wooden extension bell. This was a bell only so I added an induction coil and capacitor that I took from my supply of spare 706 telephone parts.

This photograph shows the wiring going on on my kitchen table. Look carefully and you'll see the induction coil and capacitor sitting near the wooden bell box. Once I had finished I properly connected and soldered all the wires and fitten the parts neatly inside the bell box.
