Spirit of Tongdo Temple’s Foundation

Temples in Korea have unique characteristics and preach Buddhism. Some embrace Avatamska’s thoughts, and others, called Jeongto or pure land temples, promote Amitabha and Maitrey Buddha. Still, others seek Avalokitesvara.

These features are well manifested in Tongdo Temple, Haeinsa Temple, and Sambo Temple of Songgwangsa Temple. Tongdo Temple is famous for housing Buddha’s sarira and surplice; Haeinsa Temple, for housing the woodblock collection of Tripitaka Koreana; and Songgwangsa Temple, for producing 16 state monks since the Bojo state monk. One of the three elements of Buddhism, namely, bul (Buddha), beop (teaching), and seung (monk), is eminently manifested in these temples.
