F-WGVA, Payen PA-49 Katy, Musee de l'Air et Espace, Le Bourget, 05-06-2022
The Payen 49 is the first French delta wing aircraft. It is the result of the work of Roland Payen who, since 1931, had developed the “arrow plane” formula. The PA-49 made its first flight on January 22, 1954. The 300 flights of the aircraft were used to check the performance of the delta wing and the “crocodile” rudder, serving both as steering and airbrake. This formula will later be studied for the “Concorde” prototype and taken up by Rockwell International for the Space Shuttle.
