RB-47E Stratojet, U.S. Air Force (53-4257), Oklahoma, Tinker Air Force Base
According to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, the RB-47E was a photo reconnaissance version of the basic B-47 E model. The nose of the aircraft was lengthened by nearly three feet to accommodate cameras and other reconnaissance instruments. The bomb bays were removed and only photoflash bombs for nighttime aerial photography were carried. The two 20mm cannons in the tail were retained as the only defensive armament on the aircraft. The first flight of the RB-47E was on July 3, 1953. The Boeing Wichita plant built 240 aircraft before production ended. Originally 255 aircraft were ordered but the last 15 were built as improved RB-47Ks and used for both weather and photo reconnaissance.
This aircraft was ordered in 1953 from Boeing Aircraft.
