North Carolina, Catawba County, Murray's Mill (6,015d)

John Murray built the mill in 1913, replacing another mill that was built in 1883. Three generations of the Murray family operated the mill until operations ceased in 1967. The mill sat idle until the county Historical Association purchased it in 1980. The mill was restored to working order in 1985. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The mill dam is an arch-gravity dam. An arch-gravity dam has the characteristics of both an arch dam and a gravity dam. The dam that curves upstream in a narrowing curve that directs most of the water to the sides, providing the force to compress the dam. It also uses the weight of the dam itself to hold the water back. It combines the strengths of two common dam forms and is considered a compromise between the two. A famous example is the Hoover Dam.
