California, Riverside County- Coachella Valley, Citrus Grove
The Coachella Valley is a leading citrus growing region in the United States. However, in recent years the nature of the crop has changed. According to the magazine "Palm Springs Life," the valley once boasted a wealth of grapefruit trees. But in the 1990s, as doctors began prescribing more statins to lower cholesterol, they advised their patients to avoid grapefruit. These days, the Coachella Valley grows very little grapefruit. In other cases, certain once popular citrus varieties, like Algerian and Dancy tangerines, have plummeted in popularity due to the rise of seedless varieties (Shatkin, Elina. 2023. "How Citrus Became a Top Crop in the Coachella Valley." Palm Springs Life Magazine, September 21.)
