Louisiana, St. James Parish- Vacherie, Laura Plantation House
Construction of the plantation house began in the early 1800s by 30 enslaved people. It was completed by 1805. It is a raised Creole style plantation house with a brick basement resting on brick columns and walls, supported by an underground brick foundation. The house was extensively damaged by a fire in 2004. The house was repaired, except the rear kitchen wing. I arrived at the house after the grounds were closed. Tree foliage prevented me from viewing the many architectural details associated with the Creole house. Laura Plantation is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
