Missouri, Oregon County, Mark Twain National Forest, Greer Mill Historic Site (East Elevation/Front and South Elevation/Side

The two-and-half story Greer Mill was built in 1899 on a hill up from Greer Springs. The roller mill was powered by a turbine water wheel at the spring. A complex system of cables and pulleys transmitted power from the turbine below to the mill on top of the hill 1,140 feet above the spring. The rectangular structure features a copula to facilitate ventilation by drawing air through the mill. The mill ceased operations in 1920. Most of the mill equipment was removed. The mill was in private ownership for a number of years and was a near ruin. The U. S. Forest Service- Mark Twain National Forest, purchased the mill, including the spring, in 1993 with a proviso that the seller could control the property until 2013. With the involvement of a local non-profit organization the mill was restored by 2018. The Greer Mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

I first photographed Greer Mill in 1975 when the mill was virtually a ruin. The 1975 photograph and several of my other 2023 photographs of the mill can be viewed in my album, "Mills- water Mills and Other Mills," below. Mills are listed alphabetically by state.
