North Carolina, Carteret County, Croatan National Forest, Newport Fire Tower

The Newport Fire Tower was built in 1935 by Civilian Conservation Corps workers who were housed at Camp Patterson in Company No. 5420-C. Company No. 5420-C was segregated and housed only black CCC enrollees- the "C" denotes colored. The 96-foot-tall structure is the last fire tower standing on the Croatan National Forest. (Note: the tower is also known as Simmons Fire Tower)
