Ohio, Lawrence County, Wayne National Forest, Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area

The structure at Lake Vesuvius Recration Area on the Wayne National Forest was built by Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) enrollees from Company 0526-C, a black American unit. The men of Comapny 0526-C constructed a nearby dam and seven buildings betwen 1937 and 1941.

The U. S. Army operated CCC camps and its policy of racial segregation was generally established in camp administration- most camps were segregated based on race. Some historians have argued segregated of the CCC was a failture to live up to its originial intent. The legislation that established the CCC included language forbidding discriminatory practices based on “race, color, or creed.” There were other restrictions on black involvement, espeially in the Southern states. Dispite discriminatory practices, black American enrollees played a significant role in conservation efforts and developments on public lands. Blacks enrollees earned wages and skills, and the program produced lasting positve social and economic outcomes for all Americans.
