Minnesota, Lake County, U. S. Forest Service, Superior National Forest, Kawishiwi Field Laboratory, Office and Dwelling (Rear Elevation)
The wood framed house with gable roof was built in 1931 for the Lake States Forest Experiment Station as an office, laboratory and bachelor's quarters. Forest researchers from the Forest Service's Lake States Forest Experiment Station (renamed North Central Experiment Station, and renamed again to North Central Research Station) as well as other researchers, used the building when conducting research studies on forestland in the area. The west elevation (front) of the structure face the South Kawishiwi River. The structure is one of the few remnants of pre-Civilian Conservation Corps architecture left on the Superior National Forest. It is the oldest administrative building on the Forest. The Office and Dwelling is in the Halfway Ranger Station Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing building.
