The Insectary/Garage was built in 1957 and is similar in form to the nearby Laboratory building built the same year. The building has a garage on one end and an open space enclosed with floor-to ceiling screening. Forest researchers from the Forest Service's Lake States Forest Experiment Station (renamed North Central Experiment Station, and renamed again to North Central Research Station) as well as other researchers, used the building when conducting research studies on forestland in the area. The Insectary/Garage is in the Halfway Ranger Station Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing building.
