Pine- White Pine, Minnesota, Itasca County, Chippewa National Forest, Lost Forty

White and red pines are the predominate species in the Lost Forty. Other softwoods- balsam fir and spruce- are associated species. The old growth pines exist in various conditions. To the left there is a standing dead red pine adjacent to growing white pines. The dead red pine will fall to the ground creating an opening for more sunlight to reach the forest floor. The forest is constantly undergoing regeneration and competition between species for growing space.
