North Carolina, Catawba County, Bunker Hill Covered Bridge (11,064)
The Bunker Hill Covered Bridge spanning Lyle's Creek was built in 1895. The bridge was built by local builder Andy L. Ramsour using a design technique developed by General Herman Haupt, a former Federal Army Civil War Engineer. The method was said to be an improvement over the Town's Lattice Truss Design. The original bridge was an open span that was covered in 1900. The 80 foot long bridge was restored in 1994. The bridge is a designated National Civil Engineering Landmark--it is the only remaining wood example of Haupt's Improved Lattice Truss design-- and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
