Minnesota, St. Paul St. Paul Fire Department, Engine Company No. 2
The architectural sculpture encapsulated the history of Engine Co. No. 2 that was established in 1858 as a volunteer hook-and-ladder organization. The Engine Co. No. 2 was accepted into the St. Paul Fire Department after several large fires in the summer of 1857. At that time, most of St. Paul's firefighters were in volunteer units. Engine Co. No. 2 moved into a new engine house in 1874. In 1877, the Fire Department was reorganized and firefighters became full time, paid members of the department. In 1922, another new station was built to house Engine Co. No. 2.
