According to the U. S. Forest Service, Native American presence in the Hegman Lake area dates back at least 9,000 years. It is probable the pictograph was painted 500 to 1,000 years ago. The pictograph shows a moose flanked by a dog or wolf, a human-like figure and several canoes.
