Minnesota, Lake County, Superior National Forest, Bearing Tree
"Bearing trees are very important for maintaining property corners. A bearing tree is more than just a tree. It is a very important tree used to help locate property corners and boundaries,” said Ryan Kearney, Land Surveyor, Black Hills National Forest. "When a property corner is destroyed or removed, surveyors rely on bearing trees to help determine where the property corner was originally located. If a corner remains intact, a bearing tree also serves as a marker for surveyors to verify that the corner hasn't been moved to a different location." Text from U. S.
