Turtle Nest Predation, Minnesota, Sherburne County, Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge

A nearby turtle nest had been raided by a predator as is evident by unconsumed turtle eggshells. Often, predators such as raccoon, skunk, fox, and opossum raid turtle nests within five days after the eggs are laid. Up to an estimated 80 percent of turtle nests in an area can be lost to predators. If the eggs are not discovered in the first few days their change of surviving is greater because as time passes, there is less scent associated with the nest, and it is more difficult for predators to locate the nest.
