Curtiss Aviation built the P-40E in several variants The P-40 was known as the Warhawk to the U. S, Army Air Force. British Commonwealth countries called the early versions Tomahawk and the later versions Kittyhawk. The P-40 is most widely known as the aircraft flown by the American Volunteer Group who began fighting the Japanese in China during the early days of the Pacific war. Under the command of General Claire Chennault, the aircraft and pilots were called "Flying Tigers."
The aircraft in the photograph was built in 1941 and served with Royal Canadian Air Force. It was restored for display in 1975.
