P51-D Mustang, U. S. Army Air Force (44-74939), "Willit Run," National Air and Space Museum, Washington, D. C.

The P51-D Mustang was on display in the World War II Aviation exhibition at the National Air and Space Museum. The aircraft was built in 1945 and never saw combat. After a short career the aircraft was placed on display and the name “Willit Run?” was added.

It is said that "Willit Run?" was derived from the Willow Run, Michigan military manufacturing plant that built aircraft during World War II. The facility had problems getting underway and the manufacturing process was slowed. Because of that, some folks derisively nicknamed the plant “Willit Run?" After becoming operational the Willow Run complex was a highly productive facility producing B-24 bombers.
