F-105D Thunderchief, U. S. Air Force (61-0188), Joint Base Langley- Eustis, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, Memorial Park

The Memorial Park was created to memorialize service members who participated in conflicts around the world. According to the Air Combat Command History Office, the planes at the Park are painted gray to avoid being related to any specific unit. They are there to memorialize all Airmen who gave their lives defending the country.

 

The aircraft in the photograph was ordered in 1961 and built by Republic Aviation with the tail number 61-188. In this 2017 photograph, the aircraft is marked with the tail number 61-217. The aircraft manufactured with the tail number 61-217 was shot down over North Vietnam on September 16, 1965.
