North Carolina, Wake County, Crabtree Creek Recreational Demonstration Area- Camp Sycamore, Central Wash House; William B. Umstead State Park

In 1934, under the Resettlement Administration, federal and state agencies united to buy 5,000 acres of submarginal land to develop the Crabtree Creek Recreational Demonstration Area. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), and the Works Progress Administration (WPA), helped construct the site. Four camps along with day-use and picnic facilities were built and opened to the public in 1937.

Camp Sycamore one of the four camps, had a capacity of 96 people and had three cabin clusters that surrounded a core of service buildings. Each cluster had eight sleeping cabins, a latrine, fire ring and water pump, The camp's service buildings included the dining hall/kitchen, cook's cabin, canteen, staff quarters, central washhouse, and an arts cabin. The buildings were designed based on the architectural guidelines published by the National Park Service. The rustic style structures were the results of architectural and landscape design, combined with quality craftsmanship performed by CCC and WPA workers. Camp Sycamore is in the Crabtree Creek Recreational Demonstration Area Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The building in the photograph was a central wash house, one of two remaining in the park. It has board and batten siding, lattice windows, and well-crafted examples of wrought-iron hardware. It is in the Crabtree Creek Recreational Demonstration Area Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property.
