The theater was built in 1915 as gift from Al Ringling. The American Theatre Historical Society called it "One of the finest examples of palatial design applied to a motion picture theatre in this country. The envy of Broadway." The structure was designed by C. W. and George Rapp, noted theater designers, in the French Renaissance style (Beaux Arts). The structure is on the National Register of Historic Places.
