U. S. Army, Quartermasters Corps No. 5, Fort Benning, Georgia
The two-foot gauge steam locomotive with a 2-6-2T wheel arrangement was on display at the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning in 2016. The locomotive, originally No. 1902, was built by the Davenport Locomotive Works of Davenport, Iowa. The locomotive was built to serve in Europe during World War I. However, the war ended before it was shipped to Europe. Instead it was deployed to Fort Benning. From 1919 until 1946 the Fort Benning narrow gauge railway spanned much of the post, serving as the primary means of transporting soldiers to and from training areas. It also carried supplies and assisted in lumbering and gravel operation across the post. The railway grew from two locomotives in 1919 running on a mile of track to an eventual twenty locomotives running on 27 miles of tracks.
