The Hercules a steel-hull, steam tugboat capable of long hauls in the open ocean was built in 1907. The Hercules worked along the Pacific coast towing vessels and rafting logs. In 1924, the tugboat was sold to Western Pacific Railroad to shuttled railroad car barges back and forth across San Francisco Bay. The Hercules was retired from service with Western Pacific in 1962. It was saved from the scrapyard and later acquired for preservation at the San Francisco Maritime Museum. The Hercules is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
