New Jersey, Atlantic City, Absecon Lighthouse (2,006d)

The Absecon light tower was constructed in 1857 and stand 169 feet in height. Lt George Meade was an engineer during part of its construction. When lit, the light could be seen 19.5 miles from shore. The light was decommissioned in 1933.

The original keepers dwelling was demolished sometimes after the light was decommission in 1933. The house was reconstructed in 1998, only to be destroyed by fire shortly after it was completed. The house was reconstructed again and opened to the public in 2001. The light tower is on the National Register of Historic Places.

A STORY: During the 1960s I worked summers in Atlantic City and became familiar with the light- developing an affection for it. During those years the light was managed in a caretaker status, and was not open to the public. I would visit the grounds around the light- mostly at night, and was always awestruck by its size and height.
