Texas, Kilgore, "City of Stars," Oil derricks (Replica)

In the 1930s and 1940s, Kilgore was at the center of the East Texas oil boom. There more than 1,000 wooden oil derricks in town. One plot of land was known as “the world’s richest acre.” During the Christmas season, lights were hung from some of the derricks. In time the oil field played out, the derricks were removed, and the lights were gone. To recapture its "glory," steel replicas of the old derricks were erected and the Christmas lights came back. On top of each of the sixty replica derricks there is the shape of a star. During the Christmas season, the city lights up the derricks and stars giving Kilgore the title "City of Stars."
