Florida, Lake County, Ocala National Forest, Garage
The garage was built in 1938 by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The garage is an outbuilding to a house that originally served as a home for the State Game officer for the Ocala National Forest. Later, the house was used by the U. S. Forest Service as an office and laboratory. Most recently the house and grounds were occupied by the Pittman Visitor Center. The garage is an example of CCC construction that is still being used for public purpose.
In 2015, the roof of the garage was covered with growing vegetation. During period of the summer, hot, moist air becomes essentially "trapped" by the Spanish moss hanging from the trees creating a micro climate that facilitates the growth of vegetation on the roof. The vegetation is a form of airplant (similar to the Spanish moss) because it does not need soil to grow.
