Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, Outer Battery Rodman Guns and Bombproof (3,117)

Construction of the earthen parapet and revetment wall of the Outer Battery (also known as the Water Battery) was started in 1836. The Outer Battery was constructed to provide a first line of defense, between the fort and the seawall. Thirty-nine gun emplacements were built within the battery between 1837 and 1838. In 1865, four emplacements for 15-inch Rodman guns were constructed. In 1866, two underground magazines, two underground bombproofs, and a free-standing earthen traverse were constructed within the battery. Bombproofs are brick chambers covered with sodded earthen mound that are intended to protect troops during attacks. (Information obtained for the National Register of Historic Places Nomination Form for Fort McHenry.) The Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Outer Battery Guns and Emplacement and bombproofs are contributing structures.
