Pennsylvania, Delaware County- Glen Mills, Newlin Grist Mill (6,052b)

The mill was built by Nathaniel Newlin, an Irish immigrant, in 1704. The mill was built of fieldstone into a hillside with the north side having two stories, the south side one story. A dam and a half-mile mill race, diverted water from Chester Creek to power the mill. The mill wheel was originally outside the mill. Sometime after 1817 the mill's water wheel was enclosed on the bottom floor on the north side of the mill where the water exits underground through the tail race and travels about 150 yards back to Chester Creek. In 1890, a one and half-story addition was completed with dormers on the north side of the roof, and a copula. The mill operated commercially until 1940. In 1958, rehabilitation work began on the mill and surrounding property. The Nicholas Newlin Foundation was organized to maintain and operate the mill, its other buildings, and the grounds as a historic park. In 2014, the mill was operational. The mill building is a contributing property of the Newlin Mill Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
