Oak- Southern Live Oak, Georgia, Jekyll Island
In the United States, Southern Live Oak grow mostly on sandy coastal soils from Virginia to Gulf Coast Texas, including all of Florida. Because of it low, wide spreading crown, live oak is used as shade tree and ornamental trees along paths and roadways. However, during the days of wooden ships, live oak was sought by the U. S. Navy to use in shipbuilding. Live oak is hard and its large arching limbs were good as ship ribs and ship knees.
