Cypress Forest/Freshwater Marsh, Florida, Palm Beach County- Grassy Waters Preserve
Grassy Waters Preserve is the freshwater supply for the City of West Palm Beach and surrounding municipalities. Historically, the area that is the Preserve formed the headwaters of the Northwest Fork of the Loxahatchee River, and was a part of the Greater Everglades watershed. Although the Everglades are greatly altered, the Grassy Waters Preserve is pristine remnant of the ecosystem while serving as a source of freshwater. The freshwater marsh is dominated by herbaceous rather than woody plant species. The mixed swamp forest contains a mixture of bottomland forest species including pine, cypress, palm, and various water adaptive hardwood trees. In winter, because cypress trees loose their leaves, they appear to be dead or dying trees.
